Sitting too much?

Sitting is the new smoking? We all know and understand just how dangerous and damaging smoking is. We need to realize just how damaging and dangerous sitting is to our spine and our bodies. Of course, we all need to sit down, and at times it is very beneficial and relaxing to sit. I want to emphasize how improper sitting can lead to poor standing posture. Many people sit too long during the day. Many sit too long at home. Haven’t we at some point been told to “sit up straight”? Of course!

Sitting places pressure in your lumbar region (low back) that is greater than when you are standing. With bad posture, we increase that pressure when we “slouch.” Maintaining good posture is essential to good health. Try sitting up straight and tall. Feel how relaxed you are. It is easy to breathe, and you should not feel any discomfort. Now slouch forward. Feel the muscles tighten. It’s not as easy to breathe, and internal organs are stressed. Breathing is a good relaxation technique. Doing it properly is important, and it helps you to focus.

If your job requires sitting, try taking a “stand up and move” break every 30 to 40 minutes if possible. Sitting for too long will cause lower back pain and other problems. If you experience pain while sitting, or you just can’t sit up straight, maybe it’s time for a spinal evaluation. Your posture is important – even when you are sitting.
