"Slipped" disc Q&A

First, where are these discs, and what do they do? A primary task of discs is to separate and cushion adjacent bones (vertebrae) in the spinal column from one another. These pads serve as both spacers and "shock absorbers" for the spine. Made of specialized tissues and containing a jelly-like fluid, they average about one-half inch thick, and normally function flawlessly for their owner's lifetime. The discs are much thicker in the lower portion (lumbar region) of the spine compared to the neck (cervical region).

spineSometimes a disc herniates or bulges, and presses or pinches spinal nerves. This condition is commonly called slipped disc, bulging disc or protruding disc. These are usually marked by pain, often severe.

What makes a disc fail?  Injury causes some disc problems. Falls, auto accidents, sports injuries, and lifting the wrong way are examples. Some disc syndromes come from performing repetitive work or sports movements over many months or years. Sitting or standing in a stressful way, frequently and for long periods, can do it also.

Symptoms of disc problems?  Pain! In some people, intense pain along the sciatic nerve (down the back of the leg) can come from disc trouble. It can range from a dull ache to a sharp pain, often in the low back, sometimes branching into the buttocks and leg. Movement may intensify the pain. Other common symptoms are numbness, tingling, or "pins-and-needles" feelings in the legs. But pain is usually significant and calls for an examination without delay.

Can a chiropractor help? Yes! In some cases, referral to a surgeon is necessary, but I suggest using a noninvasive approach first. Disc treatment usually involves chiropractic spinal adjustments (manipulation) to relieve pressure and irritation on the discs and nerves. This also helps in restoring proper alignment of the spinal bones. Therapies such as traction or electrical muscle stimulation are also used to help with recovery. Each disc issue is different and requires its own specific treatment plan.

What happens if it goes untreated? Besides the fact that severe pain can wreck your life, a stressed or injured disc may, if not treated, lose its ability to maintain space and flexibility in the spine. Every movement and activity of your daily life can be affected. Why take the risk?
